Creating Dimension, 5 day Masterclass with Paul Messink 28th May – 1st June 2019

May 28 - June 1

£295 – £795

Paul Messink is a master at creating thick glass panels that have great dimension, depth and atmosphere.

In this 5 day workshop, Paul will be teaching students  how to apply enamel to glass layers, and then stack and fuse these layers into solid panels. Topics covered include design, image and colour selection, layout, discussion of enamels and how they respond to fusing temperatures, painting medium, how to mix and apply enamels, fusing schedules, bubble control, kiln loading instructions, and finishing techniques. Although drawing and painting experience is helpful, it is not required. Prior fusing experience is required, however.

Students will complete some initial exercises, plus 2-3 additional projects during this class, and are encouraged to choose and bring to the class printed images for compositions they would like to use for these projects. Important image selection guidelines will be provided prior to class.

All materials will be provided, and work will be posted back to you at the end of the course.

About Paul Messink
Paul Messink is a kiln-formed glass artist who draws on prior drawing and painting experience to create hand-painted, multi-layered glass panels that present nature in deep dimension. While mostly self taught, he has been fortunate to learn from artists such as Susan Taylor Glasgow, Richard LaLonde, Mark Salsbury, Annette Baron, and Don Schneider. He now teaches his own technique.

Messink was awarded “Best in Glass” in the 2012 and 2014 Royal Oak Clay, Glass and Metal show (Royal Oak, MI), and was awarded “Multi-Media Artist of the Year” in the Art Comes Alive 2013 competition (Cincinnati, OH). In 2014 he received a category award in The Glass Prize 2014, sponsored by Warm Glass UK, and was also awarded “Best in Show” at GATHERING: Contemporary Glass from the Heartland, sponsored by the Indiana Glass Art Alliance. In 2015 he won the “People’s Choice Award in Glass” at the 3rd Brea Clay and Glass Exhibit, in Brea CA.

Messink has participated in numerous group shows around the US.
